Devils Down Highlands in Key SMC Showdown

October 17, 2019 by Toby Burrell

The Maroon Devils Men’s Soccer Team hosted the Highlands Highlanders on Wednesday night for a rematch of an earlier season game. In the previous matchup, the game went through overtime and into penalty kicks with the Highlanders taking the win. As far back as the stats go, which is 10 years, the Maroon Devils Men’s team has never beaten the Highlanders in soccer. Twenty four minutes into the game the Highlanders got on the scoreboard after some missed clears from the Devils. Five minutes later the Devils would get on the board when Junior Zachary Cline would find Junior Joao Segato for a goal. The first half would finish 1-1.

Six minutes into the second half Junior Chase Burrell would take a free kick 34 yards out and send the shot over the keepers head for a goal. The Devils would play strong defense the rest of the game taking the 2-1 win. The Devils would make a total of 215 successful passes in the game, stringing together as many as 9 at a time. “We knew going into this game it was going to be a battle.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We overcame a few mistakes and really pulled it together in the second half for the win.”

On defense Senior Jonas Trejo led the way with 15 Clears/Steals, followed by Sophomores Lucas and Levi Trantham each with 10, and Seniors Aiden Pond and Nathan Brock each with 9. In goal Junior Noel Wolf had 10 Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Junior Chase Burrell. “Chase played a really great second half and helped the team a lot from his defensive mid position.” said Cline.

The Devils improve to 4-2 in the conference and 7-7-3 overall. They sit in second place in the conference and are 1 game behind first place Hayesville. Next week they continue conference play as they travel to Cherokee on Monday for a 4:00 game and Wednesday they travel to Murphy for a 6:00 game.
