Cashiers (Special to the Maroon Devils Network) – The Maroon Devils Men’s Soccer Team traveled to the defending Smoky Mountain Conference champion Blue Ridge on Wednesday night for a soccer match-up. Swain would get on the score board first when Junior Chase Burrell would find Junior Joao Segato with a long ball. Segato would beat the keeper and bury it in the back of the net. At the 23 minute mark Junior Zachary Cline would make a pass that deflected off a Blue Ridge defender and went to Freshman Landon Matz who finished with the goal. Swain was not done in the first half. With 1:40 left in the half Burrell would find Matz for the third goal of the half.
In the second half Swain would play strong defense and finish out the game with a 3-0 win. “The boys came out ready to play this game. We had to adjust to the small field, but they made the adjustments.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We were much more focused on our goals for this game.”
On defense Senior Aiden Pond led the way with 15 Clears/Steals, followed by Senior Jonas Trejo with 12, and Sophomore Lucas Trantham with 11. In goal Junior Noel Wolf had 12 Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Sophomore Gavin Lanning. “After we identified one of the major threats, we assigned Gavin to cover the threat.” said Cline. “Gavin did a great job in denying the player the ball.”
The Devils have played everyone in the conference once and will now play each team one more time. Next week the Devils will host the Asheville Trailblazers on Monday at 6:00 for a non-conference match-up. On Wednesday the Devils will host Highlands at 6:00. In their last game, the game went through two overtime periods and penalty kicks with the Highlanders coming away with the win.
