Hayesville (Special to the Maroon Devils Network) – The Maroon Devils Men’s Soccer Team traveled to Hayesville on Monday night to take on the Hayesville Yellow Jackets. The last time the two teams met was last year when the Yellow Jackets took the 10-2 and 6-1 wins. The Devils would get on the board eight minutes into the game when Senior Nate Brock would take a corner kick and Junior Joao Segato would finish it with a header. 22 minutes into the game Hayesville would answer with a goal of their own. With just 11 minutes left in the half Hayesville would commit a foul in the box. Segato would take the penalty kick putting the Devils up 2-1. Hayesville would even the score with two minutes left in the half off a header from a corner kick.
Seven minutes into the second half the ball would bounce around inside the Devils penalty box and Hayesville would eventually get a goal out of it. The Devils would try throughout the second half to get the equalizing goal, but would fail on all the attempts. The score would fininsh with Hayesville taking the 3-2 win. “Hayesville just outplayed us.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “We started the game strong in the first 10 minutes, but after that we just seemed to not have any energy.”
In the game on defense, Sophomore Levi Trantham would lead the way with 12 clears/steals, followed by Sophomore Gavin Lanning with 9 and Senior Aiden Pond with 8. In goal Junior Noel Wolf had 15 saves. The player of the game for the Devils was Joao Segato. “Joao came in off the bench scoring two important goals for us.” said Cline. “He shows a lot of energy when he steps on the field.”
