Maroon Devils Top Bulldogs 4-0 in Soccer Action

October 3, 2019 by Toby Burrell

Bryson City (Special to the Maroon Devils Network) – The Maroon Devils Men’s Soccer Team hosted the Murphy Bulldogs on Wednesday night. Swain was coming off a win over Cherokee on Monday and Highlands was coming off a win over Highlands. The first 39 minutes of the first half found the Devils having numerous opportunities to score and just not able to convert. With one minute left in the half, the Bulldogs fouled Junior Chase Burrell right outside the box. Junior Zach Cline lined up to take the quick free kick and he dropped it off for Freshman Landon Matz to take the shot and score the goal. 30 seconds later Junior Joao Segato was fouled around 40 yards from the goal. Senior Aiden Pond would chip the ball over the Bulldog line and Segato would take the one touch shot scoring off it.

In the second half the Devils would keep the pressure up. Five and a half minutes into the half, Matz would dribble the ball inside the box and then drop it back to Burrell for the score. With 3 and a half minutes Cline would send a long ball into space in front of Freshman Matthew Gray for the score. “We played a really good game overall.” said Head Coach Scott Cline. “Our team came out ready to play from the start.”

On defense Sophomores Levi and Lucas Trantham led the way with 8 Clears/Steals each, followed by Senior Jonas Trejo with 6, Senior Aiden Pond and Junior Chase Burrell each with 5. In goal Junior Noel Wolf had 8 Saves. The Player of the Game for the Devils was Freshman Landon Matz. “In this game we could have had a lot of players selected for this.” said Cline. “Landon showed a very aggressive and persistent side that really helped the team.” Swain will have two away games next week as they travel to Hayesville on Monday for a game and then to Blue Ridge on Wednesday. Both games start at 4 PM.
