Lady Devils Remain Unbeaten in SMC With Win Over BREC

April 6, 2019 by Toby Burrell

Special to the Maroon Devils Network – The Lady Devils soccer team traveled to Cashiers on Thursday night to take on  Blue Ridge Early College. It was a low scoring game as the Lady Devils adjusted to the playing surface and the small field. It would take almost 33 minutes for the Lady Devils to score the first goal of the game. Freshman Kaylee Simmons would score from right outside the box off a pass from Senior Kyndall Cochran. The only other goal would come with five minutes left in the game when Cochran would score off a pass from Sophomore Isabelle Greene.

For the Lady Devils it has been a season of many records being broken. In this game, Greene would break her school record of assists by making her 23rd assist for the season. Another record that has been broken this season is the steal/clear record of 267 set by Sophomore Bri Ross last year. Both Ross and Sophomore Kate Poss have broken the record this year.  Ross currently has 343 for the season and Poss has 327.

In the game on defense, Ross had 37 Clears/Steals, followed by Poss with 30, Sophomore Peyton Hines and Freshman Jadyn Perez each with 25, and Sophomore Rebecca Duncan with 20.

The player of the game for the Lady Devils was Freshman Kosi Wilmot. “We asked Kosi to come in and play a position she was not used to playing.” said Cline. “She did a great job helping the team out and embracing a few different positions.”

The Lady Devils improve to 12-2 overall and 7-0 in the Smoky Mountain Conference. After Spring Break, the Lady Devils will be on the road on Tuesday, April 16th for a 4:30 game at Cherokee and then a major home game on Thursday, April 18th at 6:00 against Murphy. During the previous Murphy matchup this season, the Lady Devils won in overtime and penalty kicks. It will also be Youth Night, where youth soccer players and coaches can wear their jerseys to get in the game for free.
