Lady Devils Make Short Work in Taking 10th Win of the Season

April 6, 2019 by Toby Burrell

Bryson City – It was a rematch of the 2nd game of the season for the Lady Devils on Friday.  In that game Hiwassee Dam scored 5 runs in the bottom of the 7th to defeat Swain 5-4.  It would be the 12 straight loss for the Lady Devils to Hiwassee Dam, that covered a 6 year span.  Friday was a different story as the Lady Devils made a strong statement.  Swain scored 6 runs in the bottom of the 5th to take a 12-2 win in 5 innings.

The Lady Devils played without leading hitter Kendall Bowers, and with pitching ace Stacey Griggs unavailable to pitch.  Swain was undaunted though, getting solid production from up and down their lineup and a strong effort from freshman Anneleise Cook in the circle.

Cook pitched a gem in only her first varsity start of the season.  She went the distance scattering 4 hits and giving up only 1 earned run, while striking out 4 and walking 3.  Cook picked up her 2nd win of the season.

At the plate Swain had 14 hits in 30 at bats.  The Lady Devils got at least one hit from 8 out of their 9 batters.  Leading the way was junior Kenzie Eagleman who went 3-4 with a pair of rbi and a pair of runs scored.  Eagleman connected on her 3rd home run of the season with a solo shot to centerfield.

Savana Smith, Maize Helpman, Kele Eagleman and Kensley Chambers all had 2 hits in the game.  Chambers drove in a career high 3 runs, while Kele Eagleman scored 3 runs, and Helpman scored twice.  Leadoff hitter Brayden Taylor coaxed a pair of walks and added a hit, scoring twice and stealing 2 bases.
