Lady Devils Move to 3-1 on the Season

March 8, 2019 by Toby Burrell

Special to The Maroon Devils Network – The Swain Maroon Devils Women’s soccer team hosted Blue Ridge on Thursday night for the first Smoky Mountain Conference game of the season. It proved to be a night of strong defense and corner kicks for the Lady Devils. The Devil defense held Blue Ridge to only two shots on goal the whole game. The Lady Devils scored all three of their goals off of corner kicks. Swain would come out on top 3-0.

In the first half Swain scored their first goal 23 minutes into the game off a corner kick from Senior Kyndall Cochran that was finished by Freshman Avery Maples. With 40 seconds left in the first half Cochran would take another corner kick that was finished by Sophomore Bri Ross. 15 minutes into the second half Cochran would take one more corner kick that she would curve into the goal from the kick.

On the Defensive side of the ball the Lady Devils were led by Ross with 25 Steals/Clears. Sophomore Kate Poss added 23, Senior Jessie Richards had 16, and Sophomores Rebecca Duncan and Peyton Hines each had 10. In Goal Junior Hope Long had 2 Saves.

“I feel it was one of the best games we have played all season.” said Coach Scott Cline. “We discussed our team goals before the game and how we can achieve them. Our focus was on how to work towards our goals and the girls really embraced what we wanted to achieve.”

The Swain Player of the Game was Bri Ross. “Bri did a great job on both defense and offense. She led the team with clears on the defensive side, while also scoring a goal when we moved her up to offense.” said Cline. “She plays a key role on our team.”

The Lady Devils go to 1-0 in conference and 3-1 overall. Next week they have a rematch hosting Pisgah on Monday night at 6. Then on Thursday they travel to Murphy and Friday they visit Mitchell.
