Rosman – Friday night the Lady Devils jumped out to a 21 point first quarter lead and cruised to a 47-36 conference win at Rosman. Freshman standout Mazie Helpman made history. Helpman scored 15 points in the explosive first quarter on her way to a game high 25 points. Her scoring outburst gave Helpman 297 points in her freshman campaign, two more than Melissa Watkins scored in her freshman season, which was the previous scoring record for a freshman.
In 15 games Helpman has scored 297 points, leaving her with a 19.8 point per game average so far on the season. Helpman also leads the team with a 42.3% effective field goal percentage. Swain has 7 regular season games remaining, plus the Smoky Mountain Conference Tournament, so there is plenty of time to catch Helpman as she looks to extend her scoring record.
