Mount Airy – The Swain Lady Devils soccer team traveled to Mount Airy for a 1st round soccer matchup against the Mount Airy Granite Bears. The Lady Devils struggled from the start trying to contain the leading scorer in the Northwest 1A Conference. She had two free kicks early that found the top of the net. One from around 45 yards out. With a limited roster and key injuries at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half it proved to be too much for the Lady Devils, losing 8-1. Junior Kyndall Cochran scored the only goal for the Lady Devils, breaking the school record she set last year with 32 goals this year.
On the defensive side Sophomore Rebecca Duncan led the way with 25 clears/steals, followed by Junior Jessie Richards with 19 and Freshman Bri Ross with 17. In goal, Senior Josie Parker recorded 12 saves for the game. The Swain Player of the Game was Rebecca Duncan. “Rebecca really stepped it up for this game,” said Cline. “Battling an injury she still played a key role for our defense.”
For the season, Cochran finished second in the conference in scoring with 32 goals and 6th in the state. She was also 8th in the conference in Assists with seven. Freshman Isabelle Green finished 1st in the conference in assists with 22 and fifth in the state. She was also 8th in the conference with 9 goals. Senior Mae Duncan finished 5th in the conference with 15 assists and 16th in the state. Senior Josie Parker finished 1st in the conference and 16th in the state with 113 Saves. Freshman Bri Ross led the team with 267 Clears/Steals for the season eclipsing the school mark set by Kylie Pond last year of 199.
