Highlands – The Swain Lady Devils soccer team traveled to Highlands on Thursday night to take on the Highlands Highlanders. The Lady Devils battled through pouring rain, a soaked field, lack of subs and two overtime periods to fall to the Highlanders 4-3. Ten players played the full 100 minutes including the overtime periods and one played 90 minutes. “The girls battled hard and played all the way to the end,” said Coach Scott Cline. “One player that is not one of our regular starters and probably played her best game of the season was Dhruti Senghani. We had a lot of girls that really had to step up for this game. We talked about grit, and they truly showed a lot of grit in this game.”
Junior Kyndall Cochran started the scoring eight minutes into the game off of a pass from Freshman Isabelle Green. Highlands answered twenty minutes into the game off of a Header on a Corner Kick. The teams went into halftime tied 1-1. Highlands scored again in the second half, but Green answered off a pass from Cochran. Once again Highlands pulled ahead 3-2, but Cochran answered again. Regulation ended with the game tied 3-3. Neither team scored in the first overtime period. Halfway through the second overtime period Highlands scored bringing them ahead 4-3. Swain just could not find an answer.
On the defensive side Freshman Bri Ross lead the way with 26 clears/steals, followed by Senior Sharlotte Queen-Jackson with 18 and Senior Mae Duncan, Senior Alana Booth, Junior Jessie Richards and Sophomore Peyton Hines each with 11. In goal Senior Josie Parker recorded 10 goal keeper saves. The Swain Player of the Game was Senior Alana Booth. “Alana played hard the whole game. If she got beat she always recovered quickly,” said Cline. “I think her Roller Derby experience really helps with the physical play on the soccer field.”
