Bryson City – Thursday night the Maroon Devil wrestling team flexed their muscles, and did so in a big way. Swain dominated visiting Murphy taking an 82-0 shutout win. The Devils got 7 pins, 6 forfeits and a major decision in racking up their 82 points. In addition to the 14 matches in regulation the two teams also squared off in 3 exhibition matches. To complete their domination the Maroon Devils also took wins in those, by pin.
The match started with the 106 weight class. In that weight class Zach Cline took a forfeit win for the Devils. In the 113 Sam Green took the Devils first pin of the night. Green took his man at the 1:26 mark of the 2nd period.
The only decision of the night came in the 120 weight class. Swain senior Mac Long scored a major, by taking the match 13-2. Fellow senior Cameron Baines followed Long’s win with the second pin of the night in the 126 weight class. Baines pin came at the 1:21 mark of the 1st period.
Swain picked up back to back forfeit wins in the 132 and 138 weight classes. Lucas Brown (132) and Jonas Trejo (138) took the wins.
In the 145 weight class Sam Everhardt pinned his man with just 11 seconds remaining in the 1st period. Senior Preston Robinson followed Everhardt, scoring a pin of his own. Robinson (152) pinned his man at the 1:35 mark of the 2nd period.
Hunter Burrell (160), Cyle Ponchot (182) and Nick Thompson (195) all scored wins by forfeits in their respective classes.
Cody Long in the 170 weight class took his man by pin, recording the win with only 3 seconds remaining in the 1st period.
In the final two matches of the evening senior Will Paul and junior Nolan Brown finished off the Bulldogs. Paul pinned his man with just 1 second remaining in the 1st period. Then in the final match of the night Brown took his man by pin at the 1:38 mark of the 2nd period.
In exhibition matches the Maroon Devils Bryce Sain, Asher Brooks and Trey Spates all recorded pins.
