Bryson City – Tuesday, Swain High School held their annual Athletic Banquet. The event honors Swain High’s student athletes and their accomplishments during the 2016-17 sports season. Dinner was served prior to each sport handing out their awards, with the culmination of all sport awards and The Maroon Devil Award.
There was a tie for the biggest award of the night, the Maroon Devil Award, which is voted on by the Swain High coaching staff. Erin Jenkins and Craig Cutshaw were named as recipients of the Maroon Devil Award. Jenkins cheered in both football and basketball season as well as playing softball. Cutshaw played football, wrestling and baseball. Jenkins and Cutshaw also were awarded the Maroon Devil Booster Club Scholarship Awards. The duo was also cited by their peers as the Female and Male Sportsmanship Award winners.
Gabby Jones (volleyball, basketball, softball) was tabbed as the Female Athlete of the Year. There was another tie on the Male Athlete of the Year. Darren Blankenship (cross country, football, basketball, baseball) and Clayton Catolster (football, basketball, track) tied for the Male award.
Emma Blythe (volleyball, track) and Parker Chatham (cross country, track) were named the Academic Award winners.
