Greensboro – All season long the Maroon Devil wrestling team has been led by the trio of Craig Cutshaw (220), Chris Miller (152), and Corbin Wildcatt (285). This past weekend the trio concluded their outstanding career at SCHS with a great showing at the NCHSAA Individual State Championships.
Craig Cutshaw headlined the weekend for the Devils. In the 220 pound class Cutshaw finished as the NCHSAA State Runner-up. Cutshaw entered the tournament as the 3rd seed in the West. In the first round Cutshaw upset the 2nd seed in the East Michael Day (Pamlico) with an 11-5 decision. Then in the 2nd round Cutshaw matched up with the top seed from the West, Vincent Vielandi (Alleghany), and scored another upset win with a 5-2 decision. The win placed Cutshaw into the State Championship match against Robert Alvarez (East Montgomery). Alvarez took the match and the championship with a pin. Cutshaw finished his season with an outstanding 33-8 overall record.
In the 152 weight class Chris Miller (#3 seed in West) took an opening round win over Branson Lambert (Uwharrie Charter) the #2 seed in the East. In the second round Miller dropped a 10-6 decision to the #1 seed in the West Justin Riffle (Cherryville). Miller then battled all the way through the consolation bracket to take 3rd place in the 152 pound weight class. Miller took wins over Anthony Davis (Pamlico) in the semifinals, and then scored a major decision win over Blake Frye (Elkin) in the finals of the consolation bracket. Miller finished the season with a 35-5 overall record.
In the 285 or heavyweight class, Corbin Wildcatt followed the same path as Chris Miller. Wildcatt won his opening match over Kyle Hancock (Heide Trask) by pinfall. Next up Wildcatt dropped a 10-7 decision to Thomas Yarbrough (South Stanly) the number one seed in the East. In the consolation semifinals Wildcatt scored another pinfall, this time over Javon Armstrong (Pamlico). Then in the consolation finals Wildcatt got a 7-3 decision over Austin Hicks (Avery). For the season Wildcatt finished with a 37-5 overall record.
Junior Will Paul (195) and freshman Nathan Brock (106) also wrestled in the championships. Both wrestlers fell in the consolation semifinals.
For the tournament Swain finished 7th overall in the 1A and were in the top 40 overall for all schools 1A-4A.
