Wells Fargo Cup Fall Standings Released

November 14, 2016 by Erin Jenkins

image001Bryson City – The annual Wells Fargo Cup has released the points given for the 2016 fall sports season.

The Wells Fargo Cup, has become the symbol of overall sports excellence among high schools in North Carolina. This cup has been recognizing high schools in North Carolina since 1979 for the best overall interscholastic sports programs in each of the four classifications: 1A, 2A, 3A and 4A. Once split up into these divisions, it is then divided up by conferences.

After the completion of the 2016 fall, Smoky Mountain Conference games each team were given points based on their conference standings. Depending upon the sport and how many teams participated in that sport determines how many points are given to each team. For example, there are seven teams in the SMC that compete in the sport of football, and since there are seven teams five points were added to create a total of twelve points. The first place team then receives twelve points, and the following ranked teams then receive one point below those points until all teams are awarded.

Swain County has held possession over the cup for the past three years in the Smoky Mountain Conference, and are right now at a close second. The ranking for the fall season is as follows.

First Place: Murphy 52.5

Second Place: Swain County 48.5

Third Place: Hayesville 44.5

Fourth Place: Cherokee 37

Fifth Place: Robbinsville 30.5

Sixth Place: Andrews 25.5

Seventh Place: Blue Ridge Early College 20.5

Eighth Place: Highlands 18

Ninth Place: Rosman 14.5

Tenth Place: Tri- County Early College 10
