Swain Loses Intense Game Against Murphy

October 18, 2016 by Kylie Pond

img_2736Bryson City-  This Monday, October 17th started Swain’s homecoming week and Swain had some great soccer to top their Monday off. With only 10 minutes in play, Swain had pressured the ball and had many shots on goal including the first goal of the night by sophomore Trey Bowman. Next, senior captain Austin Shuler takes a shot at a goal for Swain but misses. With just about 25 minutes in play, two Murphy players got hurt but were both able to walk off the field. Back to playing soccer, senior Carter Davis takes two free kicks barely missing the goal and Brazilian transfer student, Matheus Giacomelli, uses his footwork skills and tries to take a shot on goal but he as well misses the goal by little. Bowman goes and tries to take another shot on goal but fails to get it in the net this time around. Senior Drew Johnson worked the field, running up and down, trying to get some good passes in and dribbling around Murphy players. Our junior defender Preston Robinson makes a great save from a Murphy free kick which ends the first half of the game with a score of 1-1. As the intensity increased during the second half, junior Brody Randell came in with some highlight goalie saves. Swain and Murphy battled it out until the last buzzer which would have ended the game but since Murphy is a conference opponent the game went into overtime. Overtime consists of two 10 minute halves to determine the winner. If the overtime ended as a tie as well, then we would go into shoot outs which consists of five players from each team that take a shot on the other team’s goalie which would lead to a difference in scores, finally ending the game. However, this game ended in the overtime. Davis made a beautiful sliding save in the first half and Swain had a shot at goal but, Murphy ended this game when a header got the ball in behind Randell, ending the game with a score 2-1 for Murphy. Swain pressured Murphy in both halves and it made a huge difference in the score comparative to their last game against each other which ended in a score of 4-0 for Murphy.

Swain’s next soccer game will be this Wednesday, October 19th at Highlands.

The following week will have three soccer games on Monday the 24th against Blue Ridge (away) , Wednesday the 26th against Highlands (home for senior night), and Thursday the 27th against Cherokee (away) to finish the season until playoffs start.
