Murphy- Our Maroon Devils’ soccer team recently won their Monday game against Andrews with a score 4-0. However, Swain started out rough in the first half of their game against the Murphy Bulldogs this Wednesday, September 21st. Both teams battled for the ball but Swain seemed not to have their heads in the game and gave two PKs (penalty kicks) for fouls to the Bulldogs and some easy goals which put the score 6-0 for Murphy at the end of the half. The two PKs gave the referee no choice but to give our Senior Carter Davis a yellow card which put him on the bench for two minutes before he could continued to play. Head coach Matt Hampton stated at the end of the game that Swain lost the first half against Murphy but won the second. Swain caged the Bulldogs back in their half of the field for the entire second half of the game. The players saw the mistakes they were making in the first and decided to improve so that they had a better second half. Our Devils did exactly that and our very own Sophomore Asija Myers scored the only goal of the night for Swain and our freshman goalie Aiden Pond blocked a tough PK keeping the Bulldogs at bay. With the amount of heart our players put in during the second half, the final score was 6-1 for Murphy. Hampton stated that if Swain plays with the same intensity as the second half of the Murphy game that this coming Monday’s home game against Highlands would end in a win for Swain. That would finally break the 12 year losing streak that Swain has against Highlands. With this loss against Murphy, Swain’s conference record is now 2-2.
The Maroon Devils’ will play the next two games at home. They will play Highlands Monday, September 26th and Blue Ridge Wednesday, September 28th. These will be two of the toughest games our Devils will face this season. Come out and support the soccer team.
