Greensboro – Friday’s NCHSAA 1A State Track and Field Championships turned into a history making event for Swain High School. Not only did the Devils win more individual championships than any previous time, they captured their 1st every team championship. The Lady Devils outdistanced North Stokes to capture the 2nd female team State Championship in school history. Swain tallied 65 team points to North Stokes 56.5, with Winston Salem Prep finishing 3rd with 54 points. The Lady Devils win came on the strength of 3 individual State Championship performances.
Senior Sarah Hyatt scored the first gold of the day. Hyatt took the State Championship in the pole vault by clearing 8’6″. Ashley Winchester cleared 8′ to take 3rd place for the Devils. Joining Hyatt and Winchester in the Devils dominance of the pole vault was Cooper Reinert. Reinert took home his 2nd State Title in the pole vault by clearing 13′.
Swain scored gold again in the 800-meter run. Sophomore Emma Pindur took the State Championship with a run of 2:22.77. Not far behind was Lynsey Hicks, who scored another 3rd place finish for the Devils with a time of 2:28.27.
In the day’s final event the Devils defending their 2015 State Title in the 4×400 meter relay. The team of Lynsey Hicks, Maleeah Langstaff, Maggie Burns, and Emma Pindur took the State Championship with a time of 4:16.43.
Swain also secured a State Runner-up finish in the 4×800 meter relay. Shelby Hyatt, Madison Travitz, Lynsey Hicks, and Emma Pindur took 2nd in the relay event with a time of 9:59.62.
Junior Kathryn Brown took the Lady Devils other 2nd place finish on the day in the discus. Brown came in with a distance of 111’1″ to take the State Runner-up spot in the discus.
Swain’s 4 individual State Champions, 2 second place finishes, and 2 third place finishes, combined with the Lady Devils team championship made for the best day in school history at a State Championship track meet.
