Pinehurst – (Special to MaroonDevils.com) Juniors Grant Shuler and Jack Cornblum represented Swain County in the 1A golf State Championship this past Monday and Tuesday at Longleaf Golf Club in Pinehurst. Jack Cornblum playing in his first championship posted an opening round 83 and turned it around the second day firing a 77 by birding the last hole. He finished with a two-day total of 160 placing him tied for 23rd out of 84 golfers. Grant Shuler, who placed 25th last year, improved his performance tremendously. He opened his championship with a 76. After the first day he was seven shots out of first place. On the second day, he posted the best score of any golfer, a thrilling one over par 72. This propelled him to a tie for second place with a two-day total of 148. After all the scores were posted, Grant was tied for second place, which required a playoff hole. Grant teed off in the playoff and crushed his three wood with a slight draw. His competitor Chris Fillingame from Starmount blasted his driver out of bounds, which required a re-tee. Grant lying two and his competitor lying four, Grant hit a low iron under a tree which lead to a short chip shot. Chris Fillingame hit his fourth over the green, chipped up, and two putted for a seven. Grant chipped his shot tight and parred the hole, securing his second place finish. This is the best any golfer has done at Swain County High School history. “Words cannot express how happy I am for Jack and Grant,” stated Coach Crisp, “Jack toughed through the bad breaks and posted a great second round. Grant finished strong and hit some great shots. I look forward to having them and the rest of the team back next year for their Senior year.”
