Lady Devils Smash 4 Home Runs on Way to 16-2 Win

April 12, 2016 by Toby Burrell

12983816_1230471890296601_1287736190991099786_oCashiers –  Swain broke open a tight contest to score 11 runs in the decisive 5th inning on their way to a 16-2 conference win over Blue Ridge.  The weather went from blowing snow, to snowing, to sunny skies, either way it was cold.  Swain warmed slowly but eventually defrosted enough to take the win.

Sophomore shortstop Grace Cabe opened things up for the Devils with a solo home run to lead off the game. Cabe fouled off 6 pitches, after taking 2 strikes, before hitting a line shot over the centerfield fence for her 1st career home run.

After Blue Ridge tied the game in the bottom of the 1st, junior second baseman Sydney Call answered in the Swain half of the 3rd.  Call, who also faced an 0-2 count, lined a shot over the centerfield fence, for her 1st career home run, to put the Devils back on top.  Only to have Blue Ridge tie in the bottom of the inning with a solo home run of their own.

Swain tallied 3 times in the top of the 4th.  Singles by Alicia Green and Bryar Buchanan started the inning.  Callyn Brown then hit her 1st career home run with a shot to left centerfield.  The 3 runs put Swain up 5-2.

Alicia Green topped off the 8 hit 11 run 5th inning with a towering 2 run home run.

Swain finished with 17 hits and 16 runs on the day.  Bryar Buchanan went 4-4, scoring 3 times and driving in a pair of runs.  Grace Cabe was 3-4 with a double, triple and home run, she drove in 2 runs and scored 2.  Erin Jenkins, Alicia Green, and Callyn Brown all had 2 hits each, with Brown driving in 3 runs.

Gabby Jones come on in relief to pick up her first win of the season in the circle.  Jones worked 2 scoreless innings, striking out 2 to get the win.
