Hayesville – Swain scored 3 runs in the 2nd inning and then made that hold up behind good pitching and solid defense to take an eventual 6-1 win over Hayesville.
In the 2nd Grace Cabe, Gabby Jones, and Bryar Buchanan all scored on separate passed balls to give Swain the 3-0 lead. Then in the 6th inning, Bryar Buchanan tripled to deep right centerfield. Buchanan scored one batter later, when Gabby Jones grounded out.
In the 7th inning Erin Jenkins legged out an infield single. Sydney Call tripled to deep centerfield to score Jenkins. One batter later Alicia Green grounded out to score Call from 3rd.
For the game Call and Jenkins were joined by Grace Cabe with 2 hits each. Each of the three also scored a run. Bryar Buchanan scored twice.
The Lady Devil defense was tough all game long. Swain wiggled out of base loaded jams in the 2nd, 4th, and 5th innings, and had runners on 1st and 2nd with no outs in the 7th inning. A nifty double play got the Devils out of the 4th inning, as Taylor Day fielded a grounder and fired home to Callyn Brown for the force, and Brown alertly fired to Caitlyn Dills at first to complete the double play.
Day was tenacious all game, and at her best when runners were in scoring position. For the game Day finished with 7 strikeouts, only 2 walks and scattered 5 hits.
