Murphy – The Swain High Golf Team traveled to Cherokee Hills on Thursday for a conference match against Murphy, Hayesville, and Robbinsville.  The threat of thunder and lightning, didn’t stop the Maroon Devils from taking first place.  They played through the rain and shot a team total of 172.  Murphy was second with a 179, third was Hayesville 197, and Robbinsville 238.  The Devils were led by Grant Shuler and Jack Cornblum both posting 40.  Also posting great scores were Cameron Hampton 44, Brett Treadway and Drew Johnson 48, and Holden Petty 54.  “This was our best team round at Cherokee Hills and even though it started raining, my boys played through the adversity.  I am proud of their performance,” stated Coach Crisp.

On Tuesday the team traveled to Hayesville and play Chatuge Shores.  Playing the front nine, the team placed first with a score of 170.  Murphy second with a 177, Hayesville 188, and Blue Ridge 209.  Pacing the Devils was Grant Shuler with a  3 over 39.  Jack Cornblum fired a 41, Drew Johnson 43, and Brett Treadway 47.  Also playing was Cameron Hampton 50 and Holden Petty 55.  “We are beginning to understand that golf is not a game of perfect,” said Coach Crisp.  “The great Bobby Jones stated that “Golf is a game that is played on a five-inch course – the distance between your ears,” and we are beginning to achieve that mentality.” The team travels back to Chatuge Shores on Thursday March 31st, Sapphire National on Tuesday April 5th, and at Smoky Mountain Country Club on Thursday April 7th.  All tee times are at 3:30 pm.
