Murphy – The Swain High Golf team traveled to Cherokee Hills on Thursday March 10th and Tuesday March 15th. The team had a difficult time the first match with understanding the greens and how to get around the course. Wind was also a factor. Grant Shuler led the Maroon Devils with a 46, followed by Jack Cornblum 47. Leveling out the top 4 scores were Cameron Hampton and Holden Petty shooting a 52. Brett Treadway carded a 63. The team placed second behind Murphy. Team totals were Murphy 183, Swain 197, Highlands 200, and Robbinsville 252. Coach Crisp stated, “This was our first match here at Cherokee Hills and this is where the first round of conference will be played, so we are learning the course and how to play each hole.”
The second time the Devils traveled to Cherokee Hills they had a much better performance. Junior Grant Shuler led the way with a 6 over 42. Jack Cornblum followed with a 45. Cameron Hampton and Brett Treadway both fired a 48 and Holden Petty a 49. The team placed second again behind Murphy’s 176 to Swain’s 183. Other teams competing were Cherokee 219 and Blue Ridge 227. “The team performed 14 shots better and everyone improved their individual scores. I am very proud of how we continue to progress in all areas of our game,” said Coach Crisp. The Devils will be at home today March 17th at Smoky Mountain Country Club, travel to Connestee Falls in Brevard on Tuesday March 22nd, and back to Cherokee Hills on March 24th.
