Cherokee – The young Maroon Devil cross country squad grew up on Wednesday. For a couple of years now, people have talked about their potential, but on Wednesday that potential became reality as the Devil’s cashed in on a Smoky Mountain Conference Championship. Swain outdistanced second place Hayesville 39 to 53 to take the crown.
Swain used a tried and true strategy, one they employed throughout their glory days, using their depth to outscore their opponents. Parker Chatham finished 5th overall on the day with a time of 18:06.11, while Darren Blankenship was close behind, finishing 7th overall with a time of 18:40.17. Then the Devils made their biggest move. After having their top two runners hold their own, Swain’s depth took over and separated them from the pack. Dwight Winchester (8th, 18:53.61), Ry Hester (13th, 19:39.48), Raine Bradley (16th, 20:01.15), and Bradley Vestal (17th, 20:08.50) all finished in the top 20 of the meet. Swain’s 3-4-5 runners outdistanced Hayesville’s runners by 20 points to give Swain the edge they needed.
Next up for the Devils will be the Western Regional Championships to be held next Saturday October 31st.
