Bryson City – Tuesday Swain moved one step closer to a Smoky Mountain Conference Championship with a 3-0 sweep of Robbinsville. The win all but ended Robbinsville’s hopes for a conference championship, leaving them with 3 conference losses. Swain travels to Rosman on Thursday and the winner of that match will, in all likelihood, secure at least a share of the title. For Swain a win would make them outright champion, while Rosman could force a tie atop the standings with them and Swain if they defeat the Lady Devils.
It was a tremendous environment on Tuesday as both school’s student sections provided the atmosphere, neither sitting down the entire match. In the end it was the senior laden Lady Devils who flexed their muscles on the court. After a back and forth first game, which the Lady Devils took 25-21, Swain settled in and pulled away taking 25-14 and 25-13 wins in the next two games.
Swain used a steady dose of senior hitters Lydia Sale and Alyssa Robinson to eventually wear down the Black Knights. Sale finished with 12 kills, while Robinson had 10, Robinson would also add 9 blocks on the front line.
Karie Jones was outstanding on the back line, finishing with 29 digs. Junior setter Autumn Brown took full advantage of Jones’ passing to record 21 assists. Adrianna Kaylor did much of her work from the service line where she had 3 aces, and more importantly kept Robbinsville’s offense on their heels.
