Bryson City, NC – The Swain Maroon Devils hosted the Andrews Wildcats at home for their fourth conference match of the season.
Swain started the first half with a goal from junior Cooper Reinert at 1:50(that is 1 minute and 50 seconds into the game). This was followed by the first goal of senior Coleman Jenkins career at 8:00 and a goal from senior Nick Callahan at 30:00. The first half ended with a score of 3-0.
Swain junior Eduardo Zavala scored 2 goals in the second half. His first goal was at 46:00 off an assist from senior captain Johnathan Duncan and his second was at 51:00. Duncan scored at 73:00 off a beautiful chip just outside of the 18 yard box. The game ended with a beautiful pass off a free kick from Duncan to Callahan who scored his second and the final goal at 79:50. Junior goal keeper Ryan Tranter made 2 fantastic saves, giving the Devils a 7-0 shutout against the Wildcats.
“I think we played well considering the team we faced but we still have room for improvement.” says Callahan who scored two goals for the Devils during the game.
“I’m not super happy with how we played last night. I want to see us control the field more and posses the ball.” says Coach Parton. “We have a tendency to change the way we play when we face a team who plays differently than we do. I want our team to play our game no matter what kind of team we play. Finding creative ways to make space and connect passes. If we can create space we will have more and more scoring opportunities and that will come with experience. Don’t get me wrong. We had some beautiful opportunities and connecting passes but I know we are capable of much more.”
Coach Parton has high hopes for his team and is building on the tradition Coach Outlaw helped put in place. Swain is now 3:1 in the conference and 3:4 in the season. The Andrews game was filmed live and is now can be viewed below. Tune in to www.maroondevils.com/watch-live for future broadcasts!
