KERNERSVILLE –
Led by a pair of super sophomores, the Lady Devils cross country season ended on a high note with a 7th place finish at the NCHSAA 1A State Championship this Saturday.
As she has all season, Shelby Hyatt was first into the finisher’s chute for Swain, placing 11th in a time of 20:43. Right behind her in 12th was Madison Travitz in a time of 20:49. Hyatt and Travitz missed All-State honors by 1 and 2 spots, respectively. Each also ran a personal best.
“It was an absolutely amazing day to watch them race,” said head coach Phil Latter. “Those girls each put the team before their own personal interests and I think that really showed today. I could not be more proud of a group of young ladies.”
Senior Lauren Shell (52nd – 22:24) and junior Erin Zwick (57th – 22:41) were next in for Swain, with freshman Kylie Pond rounding out the scorers in a personal best time of 23:40, good for 76th place. Freshman Haley Cooper (89th – 24:34) and sophomore Serina Holt (97th – 24:51) also competed for Swain.
Swain’s score of 160 left them only 9 points out of 6th place and 14 points out of 5th. By comparison, last year’s 9th place squad scored 251 points.
