Lady Devils Cross Country returns to State Championship

The Swain girls team and their coaches celebrate making State in a “pink out”

CHEROKEE – The Swain County girls cross country team will be returning to the 1A State Championship after finishing 3rd at the 1A West Regional meet on Saturday. The Community School of Davidson won with a low score of 47, followed by Lincoln Charter with 62, Swain with 92 and Pine Lake Preparatory with 128. Community School of Davidson and Lincoln Charter are both ranked in the top 3 in the State.

Swain County was the only Smoky Mountain Conference school to qualify in the girls race.

Both Shelby Hyatt (5th) and Madison Travitz (9th) were named to the All-Regional team. Lauren Shell (23rd), Erin Zwick (32nd) and Kylie Pond (39th) were the other scorers. Haley Cooper (42nd) and Serina Holt (45th) will also compete at the State Championship.

The Swain County boys placed 9th overall at the Regional meet, one spot higher than last year, despite being without two of their key contributors. Russell Bigmeat was the top finisher in 13th place.

The 1A Girls Championship race is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. on November 2nd. The meet will take place at Beeson Park in Kernersville.
