CHEROKEE – The Swain County girls repeated as Smoky Mountain Conference cross country champions on Wednesday, running away from the field over the second half of the race to secure the second SMC championship in the program’s history.
Shelby Hyatt led the charge with a 2nd place finish, followed immediately by Madison Travitz in 3rd. Lauren Shell placed 8th overall, with Erin Zwick 12th. Serina Holt rounded out the scoring for the Lady Devils, who scored half as many points as runner-up Hayesville.
The boys almost made history of their own, missing out on a win by a mere 4 points. They would go on to place 3rd overall behind Robbinsville and Hayesville. Russell Bigmeat finished in fifth place, with Parker Chatham in 8th. Phineas Little and Sam Dickson also placed in the top 15 to receive honorable mention.
Both teams will return to action a week from Saturday at the NCHSAA 1A West Regional meet at Cherokee. A top 4 finish will qualify the teams for State.
