BRYSON CITY-Last week the Maroon Devils had their regular season winning streak snapped at 21 games, this week they had a 21 game home winning streak snapped. 21 just doesn’t seem to be the Devils lucky number. Tuscola returned a kick 84 yards for the game winnning score with a little over 4 minutes remaining in the game.
Swain had just scored to take the lead at 34-28. Quarterback Raymius Smith broke a 28-28 tie with a 4 yard run with 4:43 remaining in the game. But the Devils lead would not last for long. Tuscola’s Bryce Myers took the ensuing kickoff 84 yards to tie the game, and with the extra point from Logan Lambert the Mountaineers took the lead.
In a game that saw 3 ties and 3 lead changes the two teams exchanged points in what would be, at least for fans, a highly entertaining game. Swain got on the board first with a 2 yard Spencer McCoy run, Jordan Cody added the extra point on a run, to make the score 8-0. Tuscola answsered but missed the extra point.
McCoy struck again in the 2nd quarter on a 5 yard run, this time the Devils two point try failed, leaving the score 14-6. Tuscola scored with just over 5 minutes left before half, and made good on the two point conversion to tie the game at 14.
Then the Mountaineers took their first lead of the game with just 23 seconds left before the half taking a 21-14 advantage.
But Swain made short work of their 23 seconds, needing only 2 plays to find the endzone. Spencer McCoy raced 47 yards to the Mountaineer 25 yard line. From there Raymius Smith found Jordan Cody across the middle for a 25 yard touchdown strike. Swain’s two point attempt failed, leaving the score 21-20 Tuscola at the half.
Tuscola would pad their lead midway through the 3rd quarter to go up 28-20. But the Devils used a 12 play 80 yard drive to tie the game at 28. Again it was McCoy, this time on a 13 yard run. Smith found Taylor Oros in the endzone for the 2 point conversion to tie the game.
This set up the final quarter scoring, with the Devils scoring what appeared to be the game winner at the 4:43 mark on a Smith run of 4 yards. Swain’s 2 point attempt failed, leaving the score 34-28 and setting up Tuscola’s kickoff return.
Spencer McCoy had 125 yards on 21 carries and 3 touchdowns. Raymius Smith had one of his best rushing nights as he finished with 95 yards on 12 carries and a touchdown of his own. Smith threw for 116 yards and a touchdown pass to Jordan Cody, who finished with 3 catches. Kobe Toineeta finished with 2 catches for 71 yards.
