ROBBINSVILLE – The Swain County girls cross country team recorded their first victory of the year on Wednesday, knocking off Hayesville 26-30.
Sophomore Shelby Hyatt continued her ascent in the conference, outkicking former Smoky Mountain Conference champion Kendall Toinetta of Cherokee to place 2nd overall in a time of 21:38. Robbinsville sophomore Shawnda Martin won the race with a time of 19:23.
Swain’s front running depth continued to assert itself in this race as senior Lauren Shell (23:15) and Madison Travitz (23:48) both placed in the top 8. Travitz did this despite injuring her knee after falling in the second mile and having to limp home the last half-mile of the race. Junior Erin Zwick placed 12th overall in 24:43 and freshman Haley Cooper rounded out the scoring with a 27:09 for 18th place.
While the girls celebrated their victory, the boys came up one point short of celebrating on the podium with them, placing second to Hayesville by a score of 36-37. Robbinsville was third with 50 points and Nantahala rounded out the score with 112. Russell Bigmeat ran the second fastest time of his career, turning in an 18:12 for 3rd overall. Freshman Parker Chatham was 5th in 18:53 and fellow freshman Phineas Little was 8th in 20:06. Freshman Ira Smart (12th – 20:33) and junior Sam Dickson (14th – 20:54) rounded out the team scoring.
Both teams return to action next Wednesday at Murphy.
