The Lady Devils won their 5th straight on friday, none have been more dramatic than their 9-4 win over Hayesville. Swain came from behind to tie the game at 4, and then eventaully win it with 5 runs in the top of the 8th inning. Hayesville had a firm grasp of the top spot in the SMC, with the loss they fell to 2nd behind Hiwassee Dam, who they play this week.
Trailing 4-1, the Lady Devils scored twice in the 6th. Maggie Sutton and Brianna Stepp singled for the Devils. Summer Hight and Abbe Kirby came on to run for Sutton and Stepp. Hight had advanced to third on Stepp’s single, then Kirby (running for Stepp) stole 2nd to put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Shelby Lindsay then delivered a single that scored Hight and Kirby.
In the 7th the Lady Devils tied the game at 4. Kendra Kirkland led off with a single and hustled her way to 2nd as the throw from the outfield got away from the 2nd baseman. Freshman Gaby Lane came on to run for Kirkland. Lane advanced to 3rd on a passed ball. One pitch later senior Nikki Cody singled to centerfield to score Lane and tie the game.
In the 8th, Taylor Shuler, Karie Jones, and Olivia Steely all singled with Steely scoring both Shuler and Jones. Then Kirkland and Maggie Sutton doubled with a walk to Nikki Cody sandwiched between them. Steely, Kirkland, and Cody all eventually scored to give Swain a 9-4 lead, and the win.
Sutton finished 4-5 with a pair of rbi, while Steely and Kirkland were 3-5 with a pair of rbi each.
Karie Jones picked up the win in relief of Sutton.
