Swain County High School is pleased to announce that Maroon Devil standout Matthew Maennle has signed to continue his football career with Mars Hill. Maennle was the 2012 Western North Carolina Player of the Year, as well as the Smoky Mountain Conference Back of the Year. Maennle was also named to the NC All-State team, and was the only player from WNC so honored. He completed his senior year as Swain High School’s all-time leader in every receiving category, and had 68 catches this season for 1244 yards, and is only one of 3 players to go over 1000 yards receiving in a season at Swain. Maennle led Swain with 29 touchdowns, including 22 receiving, and scored via interception return, fumble recovery, punt return, and kick return, as well as threw a touchdown pass. During Maennle’s 3 years as a starter the Devils compiled a 37-7 mark, including 30-2 over the past two seasons that saw the Devils win the 2011 State 1AA Championship and the 2012 State 1AA Runner-up.
