Raymius Smith State Championship Offensive MVP

December 3, 2012 by Toby Burrell

Quarterback Raymius Smith was named the offensive MVP for Swain in the 2012 State Championship game this past weekend in Raleigh.  Smith threw for over 200 yards in the fourth quarter alone in trying to mount a Maroon Devil comeback.  The comeback came up just short by Smith’s efforts earned him not only the MVP honors, but a new school record for passing yardage in a game.

Smith finished with 426 passing yards, more than any other Swain quarterback has thrown for, on 22 of 35 passing with 2 touchdowns.  Smith ended the season one touchdown shy of Heath Shuler’s mark of 42 for a season.

For the season Smith finished with 2771 yards, the 2nd highest passing total for a season in school history.  He completed 148 of his 235 passes, good for 63%, another school record.
