BRYSON CITY, NC What a thrilling game we Maroon Devil Fans got to experience on Friday night, an experience that we would rather not have again this season. The games first quarter stared out wit good back and forth competition on both sides of the ball. However, the second quarter was a totally different ball game, Monroe jumped up 21 points on the Maroon Devils before they even knew what happened early in the second though, they persevered and with under 6 minutes left in the second quarter Ray Smith (#5) throws a long pass down the field to Greg Tisho (#84) who scored a momentum changing touchdown. In those last six minutes of the second quarter Swain ended up scoring 28 pod quarter. The Devils were not to be dishearteneint to make the halftime score 28-21.
The second half was a back and fourth battle that had a nail-biting last few minutes. With less than two minutes left in the 4th quarter Monroe had the ball dangerously close to their goal-line. With a short run on their forth down and short attempt they would have scored, but the ball was fumbled and recovered by Swain. The Maroon Devils ran the clock down fast, just barely avoiding giving possession back to Monroe in the last few seconds. The clock hit zero and the stands and sideline ignited with cheers and emotion, because the Maroon Devils had done it again, they were going to go to State for the second year in a row.
The Maroon Devils (15-0-0) will face Southwest Onslow (13-1-1) in the State Title game at Carter Findlay Stadium on December 1st. I do not think that many of us know much about Southwest Onslow so I have included a quote from a news article written about their game against James Kenan last friday.
“Southwest Onslow stuffed James Kenan and romped into the class 1AA football championship game on Friday night, beating the Tigers 35-13.
Southwest Onslow’s defense smothered the Tigers’ rushing attack and Southwest quarterback Shak Pershey gashed James Kenan for 110 yards and three touchdowns.
“We thought we could match up with them up front,” Southwest Onslow coach Phil Padgett said.”-Powell Latimer, StarNews Staff Writer
