The Lady Devils used pinpoint serving and dominated net play in taking a 3-0 win from Hayesville in the 2nd round of the NCHSAA 1A playoffs. Swain’s serve and net play kept Hayesville from being able to mount any kind of offensive attack, especially in games two and three, as the Devils took the match by the scores of 25-16; 25-11;25-7.
At the net Swain hitters Lydia Sale, Kelley Brown, and Jenn Brown dominated for most of the match. Sale finished with 11 kills, while Kelley Brown had 10. Jenn Brown, who was matched up with Hayesville’s top hitter, finished with 6 blocks to go with 5 kills.
Serving was a big key for Swain in this match as well as their first round 3-0 sweep of Nantahala. Against Hayesville Alex Treadway and Maggie Sutton controlled the match with serves that kept Hayesville scrambling to get the ball over the net, and prevented them from being able to set up their offense. In the Nantahala contest Sutton had 7 aces, while Kristina Cloer had 5.
Swain now faces Rosman in the 3rd round of the playoffs tonight. It will mark the 4th meeting of the season between the first and second place teams in the conference.
