Maroon Devils Maul Tigers

October 22, 2012 by Toby Burrell

Bryson City

On the first Maroon Out of the year the Maroon Devils rained down points, scoring 55 unanswered points on their way to a 55-7 win over Rosman.  Swain used pinpoint passing from junior quarterback Raymius Smith to post six touchdowns through the air.

Smith threw for a career high 264 yards on 13 of 18 passes.  More importantly he threw for 6 touchdowns, which tied the school record set by Heath Shuler for touchdown passes in a game.

It took the Devils almost 11 minutes to score the first touchdown of the game, but they made up for it by scoring in rapid fire secession.  Smith found Matthew Maennle for a 2 yard touchdown pass with 1:32 left in the first quarter.  Less than a minute later he found Greg Tisho on a 26 yard stirke to close the first quarter.

Swain built a 34-0 halftime lead behind 3 more Smith touchdown tosses.  He found Maennle for two more from 30 yards and 78 yards.  Sandwiched between he hit Tisho for a 36 yard score.  Smith found finish with a 6 yard touchdown strike to Tisho with 2:29 left in the third quarter.

Garrett Lane, who finished with a game high  120 yards on 10 carries, scored on a 56 yard run.  Dakota Brown finished the Swain scoring with a 4 yard run late in the fourth quarter.

Colyn Petty made good on 6 of 7 extra point attempts.  Cooper Reinert came on to kick the final Swain extra point.

It was another dominating performance for the Maroon Devil defense.  Swain was only a kickoff return, with less than 2 minutes remaining, away from their first shutout of the season.  The Devil D limited Rosman to less than 100 yards of total offense, including 69 rushing yards.  Corbin Panther had 14 tackles, while Payton Parker had 10 to pace the Swain defense which force 5 turnovers on the night.

Cody Epps, Matthew Maennle, and Kobe Toineeta had interceptions for Swain.  Greg Tisho and Elias Huskey recovered a fumble each.  Panther had 3 sacks on the night.
