BRYSON CITY, WNC – The Maroon Devil golf team was unable to follow up their first ever conference championship as they finished second to Hayesville this past week. The Jackets took the team title by a mere two strokes over the Devils. Junior Colyn Petty fired a two day total of 151 to take the individual title. For his work Petty was named the Smoky Mountain Conference Golfer of the Year.
First round play was held on Hayesville’s home course of Chatuge Shores. With the home course advantage the Jackets built a 19 stroke lead on day one. But on day two the Devils made up 17 of the 19 strokes to come up just short.
Petty also trailed going into the second day of play, as he was one stroke behind the leader. But on day two he made up 10 strokes to take a nine stroke win over the next golfer.
All Conference performers included Petty, James Carson, and Ben Cornblum. Drew Huskey, Evan Sneed, and Matthew Maennle rounded out the Devils six man team for the tournament.
Swain will travel to Kings Mountain next Monday for the Western Regional Championships.
